Re: Dúnedain tunic, v 1.0

I think what we've learned is that Bilbo is a sucker for silk  I think the phrasing of the kerchief reference is a touch ambiguous, but yes - the waistcoat one is absolutely solid. Now I'm curious where it's coming from - if one took the strictest reading of the silk kerchiefs exchange (Bi...

Re: Amazon LoTR ‘First Trailer’

You risk being attacked and branded. enh, I don't think it's that controversial an opinion. Certainly I don't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. I'd say exactly the same thing about casting a red-headed Irishman to play Zorro. :) ... worse is the missed opportunity here. What that article is describ...

Yes - more on bindrunes:

FWIW, I quite like Dr. Crawford - he's always very scrupulous to talk about what's known, what's not known, what he's sure of, what he's not, sources for what he says, etc...

Re: Amazon LoTR ‘First Trailer’

Honestly, "yay everything is diverse now" DOES ruin my suspension of disbelief. It [perhaps paradoxically] erases all diversity - it makes every single entertainment experience feel like just another car commercial or trip to the mall, just with funny clothes. (Likewise with projecting pos...

Re: Natural Leather Dye

Okay! I promised a further report on this stuff, so here it is. Short version: It's got some quirks, but it's much easier to work with than straight walnut dye and if you like the look, it's fantastic. The key with this stuff is that part of the magic is there's vinegaroon in the mix to darken it up...

Re: Dúnedain tunic, v 1.0

Two updates to this for future readers, since Sorrel reminded me (please forgive cross-posting, I figured best to have it in one place) FIRST: my overdye in woad was... not great. It's still workable, but I'm not happy with the color and the smell was atrocious - several washings finally got the sme...

PS, re:
(thinking also of - was it Elleth's? Raw silk tunic that was justified on a similar basis).
for what it's worth, I've rethought that decision:

Re: Torches and light sources

We've a number of those for power outages and the like: they're quite out of "our" period, and with real kerosene can stink something awful - but they're bright. Personally for "period" lighting I like candles for MERF/ MERS contexts (sometimes in a skin lantern such as Greg show...

Re: Hobbit woodworking tools

Oh how fun!

As horribly botched (desecrated?) as that production was, I'm quite fond of a lot of the work WETA did, especially for the Shirefolk.

Which fan edit, may I ask?

And do you do woodwork in "Shire" fashion by any chance?

What Eofor said. Your craftsmanship is exquisite - stuff is always hairy at the leading edge of figuring things out.
I'm sure the next revision - be it in a month or a decade - will be amazing.

Re: Ithilien Quiver

I worked up a sample based on a capture of the "Faramir's Dream" scene. It seems about right in proportion, but the overall size might be off compared to my arrows. Maybe Faramir's actor is smaller than I thought, or maybe with at that flat bottom seam the arrows in their sock sit a few in...
